CURRENT AND COMPLETED PROJECTS:
Time Travel programmes where co – managed with Dept. Cultural Affairs and Sport and Bridging Ages South Africa and took place under the following activities:
These included: Visiting Programmes, Holiday and Social activities, Lifetime Memory Programmes, Computer Education Programmes, After School Mentorship Programmes, Street Games, Teens in Action, Adopt – a – Granny and the young and the helpful programme.
According to the role players involved, over 900 children and older persons (combined) where reached by this initiative.
Zela handles on average 25 puppet shows per year, dealing with issues on Elder Abuse, economic, physical and verbal abuse as well as other information. Each puppet show is usually visited by 40 – 60 older persons. They are conducted in all 16 of the district office areas in all 3 languages.
The Golden Games is a sporting event, based on an Olympic Style Model. It caters for participants of 60 years and older. This specific programme won 3rd place for the PREMIER’S EXCELLENCE AWARDS for 2008.
According to the qualitative data analysis released to us from DSD last year, we reached a total of 23 000 across 30 local events, 6 district event and the Final Provincial Golden Games event last year.
We included branding, Marketing and media exposure in the event as well as allowed local entrepreneurs to sell wares and goods at the events. We also made extensive use of local musicians and artist to pump wealth back into the local communities of the respective areas. Finally, we employed volunteers from the local area to participate for the duration of the event.
Our quantitative needs audit conducted in 2008 captured the numbers of 209 service centers and 245 clubs affiliated to the Golden Games and Older Persons programme in the Western Cape and identified a wealth of needs requested by the communities (from funding, ABET training to food subsidies).
These service an estimated total of 23 000 people across all 16 District Office in all 6 District of the Western Cape
WORLD ELDER ABUSE DAY
Awareness raising was conducted in collaboration with Action on Elder Abuse in to illustrate the plight of those who experience abuse. Zela has been at the forefront of organizing the day since 2007.
INTERNATIONAL DAY OF OLDER PERSONS
In line with the need of our governmental partner and with the United Nations initiative of Older Persons Month (October each year), Zela organized an event for Older Persons Month and in particular, International Day of Older Persons (01st October each year)
CONTRACT WORKER EMPLOYEMENT
Zela has employed 54 Active Ageing Facilitators over the course of the last 2 years. The number is allocated according to the needs of the 16 district offices. They are all youth and therefore under the age of 35. Our services are extended to the management of PAYE, UIF, job evaluations and formal employment contracts.
